  • Written by

Greek-American actress, producer and singer Rita Wilson has recently announced that she has had a double mastectomy, after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 58-year-old Hollywood star stated to People magazine, "I have taken a leave from the play 'Fish in the Dark' to deal with a personal health issue. Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma."

Wilson has discussed her diagnosis on social media and stated on her Facebook page of her revealing interview with People magazine, "Hi all. There is some news I want to share with you in hopes that if you or any woman you know is dealing with this that a second opinion is necessary and vital. Not just by another doctor but by another pathologist. I'm doing well and getting stronger every day. http://www.people.com/article/rita-wilson-breast-cancer-double-mastectomy-reconstruction."

Wilson's mother was born in a Greek village, in modern day Albania. The Greek-American star's Hellenic ethnicity plays a large role in her existence. She served as My Big Fat Greek Wedding's producer, which is the highest grossing independent film ever.

Rita Wilson also produced and held a role in My Life in Ruins. She is now set to produce the sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding! Wilson attends St. Sofia's Greek Orthodox church in Los Angeles regularly with her husband Tom Hanks.
